Have you tried my remedy yet?

By Vageesha Mishra

Once my cousin was down with a throat infection and a nagging cold. While she was pouring out an ocean into a poor piece of cloth, that probably had bigger aspirations, a gathering of middle aged aunties decided to drop in announced.

A chaos broke out after their eyes landed upon a coughing young girl, curled up in a blanket on a hot day. It was enough to bring a house down.

With gaping mouths and bulging eyes, fit the frighten anyone however strong, they started.

“Oh you have cold? Why don’t you try some turmeric in milk?,” throws one shooting up an eyebrow so they take cognizance of her words.

“No, no. Have some basil tea. By morning, you’ll have a clear nose,” cuts another.

“Just basil? It won’t be enough. We also add some ginger and black pepper to the brewing mix. Boosts inner heat,” says the third, vigorously shaking her head.

By the time strands of her hair sprang free of their tie, silently screaming for a new colouring brand, the one who had been quiet all along giving semi judging stares, jumped in. “Go take a cold bath, dear, it will all go away.”

Are you serious? All this person wants to do is sleep it off and hope for the best after popping different pills suggested by the doc. And even if they try to tread in the direction of self care, how does switching between numerous remedies, topping with a cold water blast prove any helpful?

Oh yes, when in India, you cannot escape being sick without the bombardment of unasked contrasting remedies to kill off those viruses who themselves go groaning inside, saying “ugh, not again. This isn’t age old remedy, you had read this on social media while wishing ‘good morning’ to Mrs Chawla! We owe it to your kid for the change of scenery. Glad she never washes off her hands before greeting people, haha!”

And behold, a warning always tags along a remedy, alluding to ways in which the patient could head for heaven if the disease however minor gets out of hand. To add to the their woes, they would take turns to recount horror episodes of similar incidents, taking the poor chap to the edge of a breakdown.

Plenty of them work just fine, having been passed on generation after generation and I am thoroughly guilty of sharing on a few effective kind. But these have stood tall in their general popularity over the years and “tested and tried,” by all means, several times by myself.

There a some however, that would leave one in splits.

A relentless, persistent backache troubled me last year. Someone told me to get the region kicked by a kid who qualified for the act. The pain had rendered me desperate. Medicines, precautions covered it only partially. Resting needed time which I didn’t have.

I vividly remember turning my back to him with my aunt taking his little foot in one hand and lightly going for my back.

My giggles were accompanied by his but soon enough a lingering concern creeped at the back of my head, fearing if the kid would randomly start kicking me whenever he fancied on being vastly encouraged once. Thankfully, he didn’t!

The pain took its sweet time to leave but if you ask me, I can’t a put a finger on what actually clicked!

The episode did give me a laugh. I have been closely observing ever since the mannerism of delivering a care wrapped advice and I give full marks for drama and special effects!

This was funnier than I had imagined. You have a knack of putting funny observations and family experiences in a manner that can make even the gloomiest person in the room chuckle. Great going Vageesha! I could sniff Jerome K Jerome vibes here! 😂😂 Reminded of those ancient Reader’s Digest articles where people used to share similar funny experiences of theirs, and they were first ones that I used to devour. This, my sweet friend, seems to be your forte – little pieces that get are damn enjoyable. Great blogging, re! Feels like home! 😊☺️

      3. Exactly, Rishu! I clearly remember the amused look on his face when everyone was putting him up for the task as if bol rahe ho, aaj poore din no padhai only play😂😂😂😂
Also, thank you my kind friend, this has to be one of the best comments I have got because you were reminded of two of the legendary things, the writer♥️♥️(my grins are wider than the kids’ yo, do should know that😂!) And Readers Digest! I myself used to head for that section first, they were so awesome along with humour in uniform, clearly remember in school library doing that. Now that you have mentioned, my friend used to the do same! Sometimes you remind me of him!
Consider a thousand thank yous here as I’m glad way beyond words because it reminded you of home. Yay! Yay! Thank you once again because I know you had difficulty sharing out time with little cousins doing what they usually do😂😂. Have a great Sunday!

Thanks a ton! I’m so happy to read all your encouraging words! Eeh!
Some years ago, a realisation dawned upon that if I can’t help a situation, I might as well have some fun by the sheer power of observation. You’d be surprised how mundane activities are full of humour simply by the involvement of different kinds of people!
Thanks for reading, friend. Cheers to the same😂☺️

Its funny indeed, we indians have an expertise over every issue aur bimaariyo ke liye har ghar ek doctor😂😂 I remember one of uncle residing in neighborhood has such kick expertise for remedy of hamstring pains. My mother believes hard in turmeric milk with addition of desi ghee can beat any medicine for healing cuts & wounds with thousands of logics behind it.
A good take on these weird remedies with humorous dose.
PS: Intake of Rum in winters & beer for stone are popular & found actually effective in many cases😉😛😂😅

Hahahaha you got it so right, Prashant. I’m laughing hard at your comment. Turmeric milk is otherwise sage level old ka acha remedy but yeah nai WhatsApp wale haina, unse toh dimaag kharab hojata hai. Cavity hai toh fitkari and lime laga lo tooth pe, theek hojayega. Zinda bachenge tab na!

  4. Well, we Indians have opinions and solutions on about everything under the stars. And you’ve written it very well with the humor. I see there’s a change in your writing style in this post. Is it natural or deliberate?
Most of the remedies actually work and it’s the aunties way of showing their concern😁 over something as normal as a🤧. Would be nice if they continue to be around on bigger occasions. The last remedy took the cake…get a child to kick your back! Oh Lord! You’ve definitely had some wild ecperiences☺. But it gives me an idea of what India will be like when I move. Thanks🙂

Thank you for your kinds words, your comments always make me so happy. Haha! Actually I had been putting off a travel article, wish I post it next. So I quickly scribbled something that had been bothering me for days, not deliberate I guess? But is the change nice?
Hahaha the last one, no? Drama somehow finds its way into my laugh, definitely had very wild experiences. Hahaha no worries, there is a sure shot guarantee my friend that apart from the feeling of being home, your writer brain would go in an overdrive, observing so many activities that happen around here!

With regards to your writing, its extremely well written. There’s no doubt about it but somehow felt it wasn’t your usual style, the one I’m used to. Looking forward to your travel article…the mystery place.😊

  5. I picked up a back injury in the gym when I was a student in Leeds many years ago. It keeps coming back whenever it desires. Last time I suffered from severe back pain was on my Christmas holiday in Tenerife. Had to to use the back brace for 3 – 4 weeks. You’re right, there is no quick-fix. It’s an interesting read! Take care, and be careful with your back, I really know how the lasting back pain feels. ❤️

    1. Hahaha! Your comment made me laugh. I don’t have a problem with people suggesting things. It’s the manner, they scare you with scary life stories, extra facial expressions and then don’t realise that giving breathing space to a patient is probably more important however well meaning your intentions are. You can suggest but probably less dramatically and only the well tested ones na with reaching some consensus in a group. And doable angle too.
And yes wow, herbal things are amazing. Some of them have wonderful effectivity.
Yeah Ulta, I just didn’t know how to describe that here😂😂

I wonder why an unsaid competition always has to take place when these aunties gather together. 😝
Oh, the remedy for your back! 😭😭 Gosh! I got kicked by it!

  10. Haha! TW, that was amazing and so so true. Thank you for the chuckles, my dear. It was hilarious specially that bit where someone prescribed a ‘kicking’ remedy and the thoughts that followed. Although, said in jest, I know it is not so funny when you are in that situation. Every year I get my share of remedies, a (y)ear’s worth of advice and oceans of concern when my children decide to fall sick in the midst of ‘super’concerned relatives. What I manage here alone becomes a challenge with ‘too many doctors spoiling a sick child’ and the child in question somehow just only gets worse.
Glad that your back is better. Back pain is nasty, kind of can render your waking hours into a walk in agony.
Loved this post for its genuinity and specially for the laughs. I hope your cousin did really find the best way out of her sickness as well as super concerned aunts.
    Enjoy, TW. Keep them coming.

Oh I can only imagine, what you go through. Parents with kids, they probably get the most “why don’t you try this?”
And yes you are so right, see that’s what I was trying to point out. A particular kind would be effective enough but overloading would come in the way of each, aggravating the symptoms. That is why, they should keep this in mind while giving out their remedies.
Walking hours were indeed too painful, I guess you had them too and I hope you’re better now.
I was with her. Her condition worsened, she finally ended up doing a regular remedy plus with docs assistance, she got better.
Thank you for reading my friend. Take care♥️😄

Now I can imagine you laughing with pain while the little child is busy enjoying a free kick.
Yes! I remember wincing with pain every time I sat down, every time I tried to walk and that’s about when a friend suggested swimming. Her remedy worked and worked very well. I learnt to swim as well as my back was good for a long while but it was physiotherapy that gave me complete relief..
Your poor cousin must have had to suffer the cold as well as a load of advice. Glad to know that she is better now.
Good day, my dear friend. Enjoy!

And I’m so glad it got better for you for these pains could be nasty. Physiotherapy helps no? I’ve observed that too. Swimming! I’m sure my awesome writer friend, you would have observed the funny side of life at pools, if you like, share it with us. I eagerly wait for your posts.
And I’d been longing to leave a comment on your last post after reading it but on the same day as I was getting on with all the task, I fell sick (weird food poisoning, took me three four days to be better and gather some energy.) And I’m discussing this on this post, ironic, don’t you think?😂😂😂😂😂

      3. Oh my dear, I hope you are better by now. These stomach issues are irritating and a lot dangerous too leaving you dehydrated and no food. And I hope your aunts were not around to throw in some useful advice, about a million and one, leaving you drowning in your pain and their mind-boggling ideas.
Swimming. Yes my dear. I have been meaning to write about my swimming days and will write about it soon enough. For the first few months my friend and I used YOUTUBE for our learning and then much later got a friend to help us. The experience still gives me laughs.
Will write about it soon – thank you for the bright idea.
My dear, you take care and relax. Sending in lots of hugs and wishes to get well soon.
