Escaping him

By Vageesha Mishra

“It’s time.”

Avery hurried down the arched hall, struggling to match the soundless steps of the lanky man in her floor sweeping cloak.

After months of waiting, the day had finally arrived when she was fleeing from this confinement. Away from Shenoah, their impending marriage and the inevitable pain it would bring.

Her eyes ran through the palace corners for signs of danger. Shenoah was leading the soldiers into an exploitative war, miles from the kingdom. Those staying back, snored noisily having guzzled glasses of royal wine which the man walking ahead of her had polluted by slipping in a sleeping potion.

She saw a carriage that stood far from her, outside the high reaching iron gates of the palace.
It was dark with dawn just a few hours away. Roses bloomed along the sides of the cobbled path that ran towards the gates. Misty smell mingled with those of the flowers wafted through the chilly air.

They were close to the carriage now.

Just as they made their way out, Avery breathing in the smell of freedom, heard a gasp followed by hollering.

“Catch her,” came the sound from behind them.

Perplexed, Avery turned to find Shenoah’s fuming brother glaring daggers at her. Fear racked her nerves. His unforgiving brother was not due to return until summer. Amidst weapon shots, she went for the carriage when someone clutched her.

Her heart sank abruptly. There were going to be consequences for her act of daring.

“Cut. Brilliant shot,” the director yelled from behind the mega camera, gesturing for a wrap up.

“Sam, next time you’re grabbing Lily, make sure your hand rests on her arm and not her neck. If anything were to happen to my actress, you’re paying for everything, ” he ordered.

  4. Wooh! TW, you had me wondering there and what with that picture to boot. I was wondering where you were taking this. But you had me captivated in her enchanting but treacherous world for some time. You write beautifully. Your last three posts have brought out the best creativity from within you, each of them so different and so unique. This one leaves us enchanted in her spell, the previous one in the beauty of nature and then the third rolling with laughter.
    Keep them coming, TW 🙂
