When a cow chased me and my mom!!

By Vageesha Mishra

Hey folks, so I’m starting another category wherein I will share funny, deep, emotional, happy and other episodes from my life, some of which have even moulded me into the kind of person I am today!

Let’s begin!

****

So this incident happened when I was around six that forever forbade me mentally from wearing red clothes around cows and their category except the dear buffaloes, who couldn’t care less with anything around them as long as it’s not life threatening!

Anyway, back to this story. So I was coming back home with my mom. While I wearing a cream frock, my mom was in a red and black saree (for those of you who don’t know what a saree is, it is a wrap around kind of dress but more complicated than that and far worse to handle.)

I have no clue how this idea got planted in my head that cows chase people in red clothes but it was there. So when my eyes fell upon a big cow standing in a corner, minding her business and happily munching something, I was worried.

I told my mom, “mom there’s a cow and you’re wearing red, what if it chases us?”

(Oh no, I was talking in Hindi with my mom, because unlike many of the modern parents of today, my parents believed more in instilling better manners and habits in me than just making me learn English! I agree my English isn’t perfect rather far from it but at least I never ever wreaked havoc at someone’s place while visiting them as a kid!)

My mom said, “Oh don’t worry, cows are very innocent and harmless animals. Don’t look at it and walk calmly.”

I followed everything she said and never even once dared to look at the cow again but the cow seemed to have noticed me because within a second of my mom’s comforting words, the cow started running right behind us.

I was like, “Mom…. ruuuu-nn, it’s chasing us.”

Though my dear mom was shocked, she had to start running along with me to get rid of the cow. But it kept following us. Finally we had to hide ourselves in a store outside of which the cow waited for a while before it decided it wasn’t worth its time and moved on!

We rushed home thereafter and flopped on the sofa nearly breathless.

Other than this, I’ve been chased two more times by cows, all the time I was in red clothes. Phew! Whatever have my red clothes done to you dear moo moo?!

  1. Reminds me of a time when my rooster chased me, my sister, and grandfather around the yard. It was a terrifying experience, since that rooster had been the meanest one we ever had. I can’t imagine how scary a big cow chasing you would be.

    1. A rooster? Damn, what’s with animals and their desire to trouble good people?😑 I’m laughing at the cow incident now but at the time it was so terrifying because I kept wondering what would happen if it gets us.

  2. Your description of a Saree is epic 😂😂 Loved reading this fun piece, but V, beware of docile-looking cows always😂 although I am cool with them, but darn, barking dogs freak me out, especially when crossing streets alone and they start running randomly for a quick screamy dog meetup🙄🙄

    1. Hahaha! Don’t know how my mom managed, I would have landed flat on my face😂😂
Also, after their barky meet up, one of them will turns its head to look at you and soon everyone will do the same and that’s how nightmares are made😭😂 I usually turn around and take another route, so I completely understand your plight with dogs too😭😂

      1. See I reached that conclusion because other times when I wasn’t in red clothes, they didn’t even look at me😂 So, I’ve no idea what the deal is.
But thank you for your kindness there, yes lol I’m super careful now.

  3. Lol actually cattles are color blind to the color red and green. It’s not the color, rather the movement that makes the cattle angry. Say like, If you are dressed in red but standing still while you mother is in motion, there is a higher tendency that the cattle will attack your mother.

  4. Ha ha so funny.I’ll share a two incidents with you.
I still have a mark near my eye as one dear dog scratched with it’s paws.
And also my neighbor’s friend had been chased by a duck in her childhood(I never knew duck can also chase humans and we laughed our heart out hearing this) and she took a different route to her tuition.but the duck was adamant she finally decided to stop tuition.😀😀the last time she visited my neighbor’s home also she came in like usain bolt(chased by a dog this time)
may be it’s because animals can sense our fear.you better avoid the routes the cows take 😀or just act like you ignore them😊 I know it’s tough.

    1. Oh no, Jeni that was scary, I’m glad it was only a scratch and you were okay.
I’m sorry but I’m laughing so hard at your neuighbour’s friend’s experience. I mean cows, rooster, dogs and now ducks?! What’s going on?😂! This keeps getting funnier and confusing😂😂😂😂
Lol and you said the duck was adamant making her leave her tuitions all together, oh ho thats sad and hilarious at the same time. Evil animals😭😂 Also, Usian Bolt line was epic. Hahaha! Though I seriously hope, the friend is doing good now.
Yes, you’re right, I think the cow must have smelled my fear. Lol it’ll be too difficult😂 but yes I’ll try!

  6. So glad to hear you were safe in each case. I must ask you some more details about that incident with your mother if you don’t mind. Was that in a city? a village? You mentioned about hiding in a store, are the cows roaming free in the streets? The british cows tend to be in fenced fields quite far out from the city centre, in more rural landscapes. I was going to say, maybe your cows have some spanish blood in them because of the red colour but then I just found out they are colour blind, which is quite a scary finding. I too have had my stories with cows, but unlike you I was daring them to chase me. I was a young teen back then and I was in the care of my father who had done this all his life back home in the Spanish village he grew up in. They have those festivals where they lock a street for a few days and let a cow roam free for the inhabitants to tease; it is totally harmless to the cows in this specific context. I thought back then, if I don’t have red on me, then I am safe and I can dare greatly…but now that I know, all the more scary.

    1. I don’t mind, don’t worry. See yeah cows are usually fenced in village areas far from city even here but they can be found in cities and towns too. In most cases, there are some under developed, cheap and small establishments within most cities here where some people own cows and deal in milk business. So in this incident I was in a small city, where such an area was easy to spot. Coincidentally, it was neighbouring the veggies market from where mom and I were coming from, so came across a store too! In many cases it’s easy to find these areas in small cities but now I am in one of the biggest cities of India, space wise too, so I hardly get to see cows only.
It’s so great to know about the life in Spanish village, damn I so want to travel as much as I can! I have read about this festival and there was even a movie scene on this! Wow Belle, I hadn’t thought of you as a daring child! That was so awesome to know.
Lol but the funny and scary part was much like me, even you thought the cow will leave you alone if you were not wearing red. This revelation is not doing anything good to me! Lol so scary.

      1. No this revelation doesn’t do me any good either. Thank you so much for helping me getting a better picture of the incident. I was a little concerned at first that you might come across cows quite often. It is certainly good to know that you are not so likely to do so these days. I must confess, cows do scare me a little these days. I live rather rural and in summer the cows come to inhabit some of the fields where we go walking with my dog. So summers can be quite interesting shall I say. I only dare when I see the group miles away, my mind starts making silly calculations as to their maximum speed, the distance between me and them lalala….sometimes I just change our route full stop. I do hope you can get to travel as much as you heart desire ❤

      2. Thank you for your kind concern Belle😄 I’m glad too myself, they scare me now!
Oh it must be fun, going out in fields with your dog, how nice❤ I love walking and nature, fresh air❤ how about you?
Lol I was laughing at the way you described your chasing experience with the cow. You’re daring nonetheless 😁😄
Be careful though dear Belle and have more and more runs! And thank you for your wishes❤❤

  9. Thank you so much Twinklingwords, I will try my best. They too scare me quite a lot but I try my hardest to dare as I love the particular route I take. This is yet another similarity we share :0). I too love walking and as you know I love nature so one of my most favourite activities is to walk in Nature, I find it ever so peaceful and I very much need those moments of peace. Sometimes I can almost hear the silence. Do you have something similar too?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Omg another similarity🙌😀😄! Yess! I love nature and walking through it feeds my soul and yes I need the peace you’re talking about very much. I can’t go on without spending some time in nature everyday whichever way it is possible, either in my balcony, or terrace or park. Based on your description of your present residence, I’m pretty sure, your walks are beautiful and full of nature. Take more pictures of it Belle, would look amazing❤❤

      1. I am the same, I totally need a daily pause in Nature. I love the way you put it actually, walking in Nature totally feeds my soul as well. It’s where I feel the most me if that makes any sense. Nature is only minutes away from where I live. It is mostly farmlands and a few tiny forests too. I shall definitely take my camera with me as the weather gets a little nicer on my fingers. Similarly do please take pictures of your side of the world, the Nature around you, it is ever so precious to my eyes ❤

      2. Thank you, Belle. Of course it makes sense, it must make you more self aware and alive!❤❤ love it for that😄thank you so much, yes I would definitely do the same. Yeah sure, take them when you feel absolutely like it, I’m already sure they’d turn out amazing and artistic like your other pictures😄

  10. At least you had your mom with you, I got chased not by cow but a full-fledged ox (I guess). I must have been in 3rd grade or something like that and wasn’t even wearing Red. It probably didn’t like me minding my own business in early morning. Thanks to that aunty who noticed the scene and asked me to enter her house. So yeah, nobody got hurt but what if something had happened, something real bad. It was scary. Phew!

And well I loved your narration girl. It made me laugh (not when you said that cow started chasing you because I probably have lived it) at instances like your stanza in brackets and the ending line. Stuff like that. 😀

    1. Hey Aditi, oh no that must have been so scary. I’m honestly glad you were alright and the aunty came to your rescue. Cows are scary but oxes are like nightmare version of cows, shoot man!
Hahaha thank you so much, I’m glad you found it entertaining! Also, I know of course you weren’t laughing at the chasing part!

  11. I feel animals do sense fear especially in young kids. Red clothes being instigators for many animals including bulls is a popular fact. I had similar encounters with dogs in my early childhood days. I am still scared of some big dogs. It was nice reading this post. Keep writing. Have a great day 🙂

  12. 3 episodes of a cow chasing you?! Must be something to do with your past life😀. Jokes apart…it must have been extremely scary when it happened. I am absolutely scared of all those street dogs in India.

    1. Hahaha possible no? Who knows?! Yeah very scary, it’s like there’s no way to go! I’m scared of dogs myself and the streets here are full of them. I have actually changed my route a billion times to avoid running into a gang😱😂🙄
